PHV to tech transfer production and testing of PHV01 (monovalent VSV ΔG Marburg Angola) to the US to bolster live viral vaccine domestic manufacturing capacity.
CAMBRIDGE, MA, UNITED STATES, August 6, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Public Health Vaccines, LLC (PHV), a biotechnology company out of Cambridge, MA, has been awarded a contract from the Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Preparedness Consortium (BioMaP-Consortium) to tech transfer production and testing of its monovalent VSV ΔG Marburg (Angola) vaccine candidate (PHV01) to the United States to bolster live viral vaccine domestic manufacturing capacity. Domestic capacity for producing live viral vectors—particularly those used in viral hemorrhagic fever vaccines—remains limited, and expanding this capability is essential for strengthening the nation’s vaccine manufacturing base, improving health security preparedness, and enabling a faster, more effective response to both known and emerging infectious disease threats.
The BioMaP-Consortium brings together pharmaceutical, medical, academic, and scientific organizations working toward successful development and delivery of medical countermeasure materials and products. This project has been funded in whole or in part with federal funds from the Department of Health and Human Services; Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR); Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, under OT number #75A50123D00003.
PHV has been developing PHV01 in collaboration with the BARDA since February of 2019 under contract #HHSO100201900022C. Since then, the company has successfully advanced the vaccine candidate through Phase 1 clinical testing and will be entering Phase II clinical testing in the coming months. Under this approximately $11 million award, PHV will transfer the complete PHV01 manufacturing process—including BDS (upstream and downstream) and FDP (formulation, fill/finish)—from offshore facilities to Ascend-ABL’s U.S.-based CGMP manufacturing sites in MD and FL. This transfer will establish domestic readiness for Phase 2-scale production and create a foundation for rapid scale-up during emergencies.
PHV’s Chief Operating Officer Dr. Joan Fusco stated, “Robust domestic manufacturing capability is essential to a reliable medical countermeasure supply chain for outbreak preparedness and response. This program is a major step toward establishing the U.S.-based capability and capacity needed to produce recombinant VSV-vectored filovirus vaccines. PHV’s rVSV-Marburg vaccine leads our vaccine portfolio for filoviruses and reflects our successful technology transfers, established manufacturing processes, and platform expertise. We are proud to partner with BioMaP-Consortium, ATI and ABL on this important program to strengthen U.S. outbreak response readiness, and we thank BioMaP-Consortium/BARDA for their continued commitment and support to advance rVSV-based filovirus vaccines.”
Marburg virus is a hemorrhagic fever virus of the Filoviridae family that causes Marburg Virus Disease, a rare but severe hemorrhagic fever that affects people and non-human primates and has a fatality ratio of up to 88%. In addition to being a naturally occurring public health threat, it has been determined to present a material threat to national security by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. There are currently no licensed vaccines for Marburg virus; PHV01 will help fill this critical unmet medical need. The PHV01 vaccine is leveraging the proven recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSV) vector platform originally developed by the Public Health Agency of Canada.
